Someone asked a question in one of our services about the "unforgivable sin" mentioned in Matthew 12. Below is a simple explanation that may be helpful. Cheers Unforgivable Sin: Mathew 12:31-32 “ Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come ”. (Blasphemy – To speak irreverently of God, to utter irreverent words, show contempt for God or sacred things. Words or actions that dishonour God). Jesus Healed a blind, mute, demon possessed man and the multitudes were amazed. The response from the Pharisees was accusation and an attempt to discredit Jesus, suggesting the works he did was of the ruler of demons. The Pharisees had blasphemed against the Spirit by attributing the power by which Christ did miracles to Satan instead of the Holy Spirit.
The unforgivable sin is the deliberate refusal to acknowledge Gods power (Holy Spirit) in Christ. It indicates a deliberate and irreversible hardness of heart. Jesus said they can’t be forgiven- not because their sin was worse than any other, but because they would not ask for forgiveness. Whoever rejects the prompting of the Holy Spirit removes himself or herself from the only force that can lead him or her to repentance and restoration to God.
